day three-hundred-and-fifteen - luristan newt

i'm a salamander, you can be one too!
'cos having toxic skin is the thing to do!

using newts for pets... is not the way!
hear what captain planet has to say:

"the power...(to choose an ethical pet)... is yours!"

p.s. captain planet may or may not have been misquoted

day two-hundred-and-ninety-nine - alpine newt

what are the chances i can draw the final 66 animals this weekend? i can't see how i can spend much time on drawing with uni starting in two days, although i won't have a job after friday. that's the trick. be unemployed! then you can achieve anything! (except living of course, and eating and such...)

in any case, the alpine newt doesn't have such worries. because he has a bright orange belly and comely spots (comely sounds like such a dirty word for some reason).

plus, he's clearly ready for action.

those colours are so inaccurate - but you get the gist. all the photos of these guys are of them swimming, but they actually live in forests. forest pools i guess... but they are only marine (and orange) during mating season. once that's all done and dusted they come back to land and become boring brown newts once more. what a cool newt though - they get to have an aquatic alter ego!

alright. that's enough for today.

day two-hundred-and-fifty-three - giant waxy monkey tree frog

that name just sounds like a random collection of words...

© jem barratt

he doesn't look that giant. or that much like a monkey. but he sure is a frog.

he suuuuure is.

p.s. i wish i had a portable pocket scanner because i had to photograph this and then struggle to photoshop it into niceness (i.e. get mr mantis to fix it)

day one-hundred-and-forty-five - white-spotted frog

this australian froggy is so cute

© jem barratt

also his scientific name sounds like a magic spell: heleioporus albopunctatus!
(the equally syllabled words sure help with that)

frogs are in big trouble you guys - you should help if you can, by donating moneys of course but also by giving information on frog calls and where you found them (if you find them). i myself have given money to the ark but i would like to help them with frog distribution knowledge too

until then i hope my drawing is a nice reminder of how cool frogs are

day one-hundred-and-twenty-eight - cane toad

i feel kind of bad for drawing such an enemy of our country, but maybe i drew it so i could burn it later like an effigy? actually have we tried that australia?

© jem barratt

i love sketches (you may have noticed) - probably at least partly due to my laziness. i particularly like this one because often i ruin pictures with excessive shading and details.

and isn't the threat of mr toad coming to "get ya" hauntingly real. yes. who needs 3D when you have half-formed 2D lines.

don't answer that.
